Television has acquired the rights to The Forbidden Game trilogy of horror YA novels by LJ Smith for Greg Berlanti’s studio-based Berlanti Productions to adapt as TV series. I would highly recommend it to any fan of L.J. Overall, an exciting, fast-paced book with good growing-up and relationship themes.

Alcohol/Drugs: No references as far as I can remember.

You know your tolerance levels best, but I'd say 13+. Although one of the worse parts in the third book bothered me. Violence: Although there is inherently violence and scary scenes, it is not over the top or gory. Language: Very few, relatively low-level curse words sprinkled in. This is not necessarily bad, but although the plot would be exciting to any age group I think, the message is geared toward Young Adults. It may even add a little more zest since it's a bit different. I thought the clothes descriptions were just a bit out there and quirky, and now I understand why I didn't get some of the references, but it's not something I would have remarked upon had I not seen the original publishing date. I was surprised when I stepped back and realized that the book was quite a few years old. The characters feel like someone I could meet tomorrow. Although real and vibrant, it does not make me hear the things that go bump in the night-not in a bad way at least. There is a good theme of fear and facing your personal demons. I love how strong the female characters are. You can feel it in Jenny's narration and see it in the others. Each of the characters has his or her own distinct growth and journey. The characters are unique, complex, and exciting. I had my doubts before I bought it, but now I would have bought it five times over. I am still on an adrenaline rush from reading. The books pulled me in and did not spit me back out until I was finished. Fankly the Vampire Diaries were boring to me, and love the Night World series and use them a lot to fill in the times between new books, but this is quite a bit better. 'Forbidden Game' is just not her best work in my opinion, but then I seem to be in the minority. But if you don't have time to read a whole lot I strongly suggest 'Dark Visions' or the 'Night World' series if you're determined to read something by this author. If you read a lot (like I do) this is entertaining enough for a casual read. There seemed to be more depth & emotion, and if the whole book would have shown that deeper side of the characters (especially Julian) maybe I would have rated it at least a 4. I was invested enough that I had to find out what happened, and I think the last "book" was definitely the best part. I just struggled a little, which is rare for me. However, I never thought of not finishing it. I usually root for the "bad" boys, but Julian didn't really reel me in until very late in the book - and Tom was just too safe & boring to really care about. Maybe Jenny is just too perfect, I like my heroines with a few flaws - it makes them more relatable. And it wasn't BAD, don't get me wrong - I can't even put my finger on why I didn't love it. Throw in the mythology with runes & multiple worlds - which really could have been explored more - should have made for a fascinating read. The idea of a game becoming real and facing your biggest fears, with a twist of romance / love triangle with the typical bad boy you hate to love - it should have been perfect for me. With that said, I could not get invested in this book like most of the other readers. I want to start by saying I really like L.J.
